types of accumulator in hydraulic system

Hydraulics are important in many of the machines we use daily. They are what help these machines move and do work. One component of a hydraulic system is an accumulator. 15.gif Accumulators, are devices for storing energy in a pressurized fluid. There are many types of accumulators, which function slightly differently. Let’s get to know them better to see how they make machines work better.

Hydraulic accumulators are the counterpart of the batteries in a hydraulic system. They keep an excess of fluid under pressure. The accumulator releases the pressurized fluid to assist when the machine requires more power. This can help the machine perform faster and better. Bladder, piston, and diaphragm are the three most popular accumulator designs.

Bladder, Piston, and Diaphragm

A flexible bladder is disposed in the bladder accumulator. As fluid is pumped into the accumulator, the bladder squishes. This is charging the fluid with energy. When the machine needs a little more juice, the fluid pushes against the bladder and exits to help the machine work.

A diaphragm type accumulator has a working diaphragm which separates the fluid and gas. When fluid is pumped in it pushes out against the diaphragm while storing energy. When the machine requires more power, the diaphragm discharges the fluid to assist.
